Artist Talk: Collaboration as Inspiration: Thoughts on Working with Others – with Artist Suze Woolf
Thursday, October 17th, 2024
I’m chiefly a painter and a book artist, though I’ve dabbled in installations that grew out of those more traditional arts. I have been deeply involved in the issues affecting the natural world and therefore us. Each time I think I’ve reached a creative dead end, something I read, see, or learn makes me reach out to other kinds of experts. I have been profoundly influenced by a) working in long series; b) residencies in different places and kinds of institutions; c) listening to scientists d) collaborating with artists from disciplines far from my own—everything from papermakers to music composers. I will show some of the results and how those collaborations changed what I would have done on my own. I have some philosophical and practical tips for those kinds of projects.
Suze Woolf: I studied ceramics and printmaking at the University of Washington. An early adopter of computer graphics, my career has also included print and interface design. Though known as a watercolorist, I explore a wide range of media from painting, paper-casting, artist books and pyrography to installation –sometimes all together.
I have exhibited around the Pacific Northwest but also other parts of the US and Canada. My work is in museums and many public and private collections. I’ve curated a large travelling exhibit, juried competitions for municipalities and artist organizations, and contributed work to non-profit fundraising.
I have received grants, stipends and exhibits from Artist Trust, Shunpike, The Entrada Institute, Zion Natural History Association, the Museum of Northwest Art, the San Juan Islands Museum of Art, Missoula Art Museum and the University of Montana. I’ve been artist in residence in Zion, Glacier, Capitol Reef and North Cascades, Olympic and Great Basin National Parks. I was a test resident at the Grand Canyon Trust’s Kane Ranch. I’ve also been an invited resident at art colonies such as Banff Centre, Vermont Studio Center, Willowtail Springs, Jentel , Playa Summer Lake, Centrum, Mineral School and Sitka Center for Art & Ecology. I attended nine annual plein air invitationals at Zion National Park and coordinate plein air outings in the Seattle area weekly from May to October.
