This is a deep dive into AI art and animation, aimed at demystifying the process of making generative art and animation. I’ll cover various strategies for making work that is less derivative– as AI is, by its very essence, a derivative medium– and reinforce the notion that practitioners of art are the ones best suited to utilize the various AI art and animation packages, particularly in regards to production pipelines.

Jazno Francoeur: I am an award-winning animator, having most recently worked on “Shelter in Place”, a seven minute short screened at Cannes last year. I am currently working on “21 Martyrs”, an animated short dedicated to the Egyptian Coptics murdered by ISIS in 2010 in Libya, and also “Miss Ethnic: Non-Specific,” a feature film based on a one-person play. In 2009, I received a Certificate of Completion in VFX education from Lucasfilm, Singapore. Prior to that, I worked as a traditional VFX animator for Walt Disney Feature Animation from 1990 to 2004 on a range of projects, including The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Mulan, Lilo and Stitch, Tarzan, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Emperor’s New Groove, Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Roger Rabbit’s Trail Mix-Up, John Henry, and the Aladdin Sega-Genesis video game. I’ve been the Program Director for DigiPen’s BFA DAA in Digital Art and Animation since 2012, and prior to that oversaw DigiPen’s expansion into other markets, such as Singapore, Thailand, and Spain. I have conducted animation workshops and lectures in Italy, Spain, Lebanon, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Japan, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, and Missouri.
